Our main tent is a Wynnster Satellite 9, as it has been since we started serious camping in 2003 - we are on our second; the first is stashed under our bed, worn but usable. While nominally a nine man tent, it could really only accommodate 9 adults for a bout of intense bacchanalia. However, for five of us it is the perfect fit, giving us plenty of room to breathe when tent-bound in the rain.

Despite my previous bravado, the plan is to try to mix up wild camping with staying at proper campsites. With wild camping, you really have to move at least every three days to prevent damage to the environment. Some of the places we are going, we'd like to visit in depth, so we aim to camp conventionally. The showers are nice too.

So here we are, staring down the barrel of one of the most challenging and unusual holidays we have ever embarked on: three weeks wild camping in Scotland, the country famous for it's bad weather and voracious insect population.
